Coffee! A repeat theme from last years 52 week challenge I wanted to do something different this time so I set out to catch some coffee in the wild…

We are a society of caffeine addicts, even in Salt Lake City where a large part of the populace is LDS and doesn’t drink coffee you still see lots of people clutching onto their cups and mugs like they’re lifelines on a cliffs edge. Commuters drive with one hand while gingerly balancing an oversized superheated cup in the other, once at the office they reside in a place of honor on the desk and accompany you to every meeting and interoffice visit, until they’re empty…

Tossed aside and abandoned as if they never had any value at all you see these sad reminders of a temporary caffeine fix in all sorts of places, and that’s what I wanted to capture. So with my wife and daughter in tow we set out for a chilly evening stroll around the 300 South and Main Street block in Salt Lake City to find them, it didn’t take long.

Week 5 of 52 Theme: “Up” You look so small from up here…

The theme of “Up” leaves quite a bit open to the imagination so in these types of instances I try to look for opportunities that will give me a unique, or at the very least an off the wall take on the theme. It just so happens that I was able to gain access to a building overlooking the Gallivan Center Ice Rink in downtown Salt Lake City around sunset so I could grab this shot in some nice light.

We were here for my wifes work party, they had reserved the ice rink for a few hours for family and friends with plenty of warm food and hot chocolate on hand to keep you cozy and fueled up for the wobbly, sometimes bruising laps around the ice.

I wanted to make the skaters look like toy figures so I used photoshop to simulate a “Tilt Shift” type of effect making them look even smaller than they actually are.

I also couldn’t resist walking around the plaza and took a few other shots this time in HDR to accommodate the wider dynamic range of light as the sun set behind the buildings.

Week 2 of 52 – Theme: “Black and White” Frozen in Time

Winter in Utah can look really magical especially after a large snow storm, and this year we’ve had a good amount of snow, so I was determined to use it in this weeks shot. I set out with my wife on a beautiful and very chilly Sunday afternoon to head up to the mouth of Little Cottonwood canyon to a trail head that promised some spectacular views of snow covered trees, a river with snow frosted banks and rocks with granite cliffs in the background. Can you imagine what that would look like? Me too, unfortunately the trail was gated and locked for the season (I have no idea why.) So onto the back up plan a park on the east bench, but that didn’t pan out as well (to much deep snow hiking for our time limit – the sun was setting fast)

So we headed to the back up to the back up (you’ll see next week that this is going to be a trend this year) Good ‘ol Wheeler Farm is almost always open and what’s more fun than trudging through shin high snow in 10 degree weather and losing all feeling in your extremities? Well it’s worth it at least…

After one lap around we were well and truly frozen so we headed home, not exactly the shots I had envisioned for this weeks theme, although I was happy with what I was able to shoot.

Week 47′s theme of “Feeling Nostalgic” happened to coincide with a Photowalking Utah Photowalk to the Hill Aerospace Museum in Ogden, Utah. I thought it would be a perfect place to find a shot to reflect nostalgia seeing how it’s full of old planes and related things from long ago.

The museum has three main display areas which are two large hangars and an extensive outdoor area. The two indoor buildings are divided by era with the first one housing the beginnings of flight up to the Korean war (with a few Vietnam era planes thrown in due to space limits) and the second displays the jet age to modern times.

The Korean War era Bell TH-13 “Sioux” Or as I like to call it the “M.A.S.H.” helicopter!

For info about that reference look up the MASH TV show. 

The F-86 Sabre one of my favorite planes of all time! (notice the “MASH” tv show style sign, a nice touch!)

C-47 WW-II cargo plane on display between the two hangars outside, this was the first time I’ve walked back to this area, they also had a F-4 and F-16 static display models (the kind you often see on pedestals outside museums/airfields.)

Entering the second hangar we find displays that cover the Jet Age up to modern times. Many of the displays were recently re-arranged and you can now walk around many of them where as before they were all packed tightly against the wall and viewing angles were more limited. I didn’t have the time to fully explore as I would have liked, but I still got a few shots I liked.
